- After 20 minutes your blood pressure will go down.
- After 24 hours your chance of heart attack will diminish.
- After 2 days your nerve endings will begin to repair and your sense of smell will start to return.
- After 2 months you will stop coughing. Fatigue and shortness of breath will lessen.
- After 10 years your risk of lung cancer will drop by 50% compared to the continued use of tobacco.
About the Program
- Smoking cessation classes
Participate in one of our approved classes , and submit a Smoking Cessation Rebate upon completion. - Prescribed tobacco cessation medications
See your doctor for his/her recommendation. - Nicotine replacement products
The smoking cessation classes will teach you more about these replacement therapies. You may choose any one of the nicotine replacement therapies that work for you: - Nicotine patch
- Nicotine lozenges (such as Commit lozenges)
- Nicotine gum (such as Nicorette)
Eligibility and Fees
- All members are eligible
- Class fees apply and vary depending on location of class
- Reimbursement of up to $100 for smoking cessation classes can be used once a year
- Reimbursement of up to $224 per year toward the cost of nicotine replacement therapy ($4 per day for an 8-week supply of nicotine patches)
- Note: UHA will only reimburse nicotine replacement therapy if you are enrolled in a smoking cessation program.
- There may be a co-payment on some medications or supplies1

Research has shown that smoking cessation classes and nicotine replacement together offer people the best chances of quitting smoking. Therefore, REIMBURSEMENT FOR NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IS AVAILABLE ONLY IF YOU ARE ENROLLED IN A SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAM.
