UHA NAMED 2010 HEALTHIEST WORKPLACE

(HONOLULU, April 9, 2010)-Hawaii commercial health insurer, UHA, received top honors as the Healthiest Workplace among medium-sized companies, in addition to being honored as one of the Best Places to Work by the Hawaii Business Magazine.

"Employers have a big stake in promoting a healthy workplace and that could mean lower health insurance premiums and increased productivity," states Dr. Max Botticelli, UHA CEO. UHA spends more than $100,000 annually on their wellness program. The program includes healthy breakfast items, fresh fruits, and reimbursement for participation in wellness activities such as personal trainer sessions and/or gym memberships. Associates are also provided up to 2 hours of paid leave each week to engage in physical fitness activities.

The wellness program also provides UHA associates with individual and team bonuses and up to eight hours of personal leave every six months for participation in the program. The program rewards associates who maintain a healthy lifestyle through completion of a health risk assessment and participation in various wellness groups such as activity, nutrition and weight management, smoking cessation, and mental health.

Founded in 1996 by a group of physician teachers at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine, UHA provides medical, drug, and vision plans to Hawaii employer groups. By meeting strict quality standards to ensure clinically sound decision-making that respects the rights of both patients and medical providers, UHA received accreditation in Health Utilization Management through URAC.
