The 2,400-square-foot facility houses a variety of fitness equipment to provide what was most desired and would be most utilized by the staff of 40 at the Queen Street location. All 100 Lex Brodie’s employees from any location are welcome to use the Caveman Fit Club, as well.
The Caveman Fit Club features:
- Basketball half-court with college-height hoop
- Stationary bicycle
- Heavy punching bag
- Playground-style drinking fountain
- BBQ gas grill
- 55-inch flat-screen television
Scott Williams, Lex Brodie’s executive director, said that they were inspired by the company’s long-time insurer, UHA Health Insurance (UHA), which helped them focus on employee wellness. When the Queen Street location recently reconfigured the work areas, they realized that the unused space could be transformed into a tangible employee benefit.
Williams explains, “Our employees are the key to our business success. We care about their well-being and want them to be as healthy as possible.”
Lex Brodie’s also participated in UHA’s “The Biggest Loser” campaign in 2013 to encourage the employees of local companies to make healthy changes for life; the company’s three employees who participated lost a total of 73 pounds over a three-month period.
A focal point of the Caveman Fit Club is a scale that has been a fixture at the Queen Street location since the 1960s (pictured left). According to Williams, “It was a different era, but Lex himself was very concerned about the health of his employees and saw them as an extension of his family. He used to weigh his employees on this very scale and encourage them to get healthy if they gained weight! Lex, who lived until he was 98-years-old, was a role model for healthy living and surfed in Waikiki until he was 90!”
The company even developed a Caveman Fit Club logo: an “evolving” caveman –an animation of the actual Little Joe caveman of its logo – who evolves from unhealthy to healthy.
