UHA Health Insurance Supports Economic Health with Mana Up
Local health insurance company teams up with the Hawai‘i accelerator program
HONOLULU (April 27, 2021) - UHA Health Insurance is the latest to contribute to Mana Up’s accelerator program designed to help Hawai‘i product companies reach global markets. UHA, which offers the largest network of physicians in the state, was founded by the late UHA CEO Dr. Max Botticelli and a group of fellow teaching physicians from the University of Hawai‘i’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Botticelli was a pioneer of innovation in Hawai‘i’s healthcare sector, and had an exciting vision to form a different kind of health insurance company for locals almost 25 years ago.
“As a local physician, Dr. Botticelli understood Hawai‘i’s health care needs at the time, and helped to build UHA into one of Hawaii’s leading insurers today. Similarly, as entrepreneurs, we aim to build up our state’s economy in a way that benefits residents,” says Meli James, cofounder of Mana Up. “We are proud to team up with top local corporations like UHA, and are thrilled to have their backing as we create a more resilient Hawai‘i.”
In addition to helping local businesses scale globally through its annual six-month accelerator program, Mana Up offers a robust alumni program for its graduates including workshops and other resources. UHA will also host alumni workshops such as “Insurance 101” to provide education to new employers, which will be beneficial to Mana Up companies as many of them continue to expand, creating more jobs and multiplying their staff. It also plans to provide a workplace wellness workshop tied to its Resilience webinar series, which helps employers and individuals reimagine both the workplace and their lifestyles.
“We were once a local start-up endeavoring to deliver healthcare in a better way. Nearly 25 years later, we believe in Mana Up’s mission and its support of entrepreneurship to not only create jobs, but to share authentic Hawai‘i products with the world,” says UHA Health Insurance CEO and president Howard Lee. “We are honored to be its newest Voyager partner and look forward to seeing the growth in these 10 local companies during the upcoming cohort and far into the future.”
Mana Up is an economic development initiative for Hawai‘i that can generate success for the economy, support the high cost of living, and provide well-paying jobs for residents. This new collaboration will allow Mana Up and UHA Health Insurance to establish a foundation for a stronger Hawai‘i through an ecosystem that fosters better healthcare and regenerative entrepreneurship.
