UHA Health Insurance Selects New Pharmacy Benefits Provider to Expand Member Services and Address Industry’s Prescription Drug Trends

Honolulu, HI (May 20, 2016) – UHA Health Insurance (UHA) has selected Express Scripts as its new provider of pharmacy benefits starting June 1, 2016.

UHA recently evaluated pharmacy benefit management capabilities during a comprehensive review, selecting Express Scripts based on clear benefits to its members and physician-providers in three areas: lower prescription costs, increased availability of drug and cost information, and improved customer service including access to Express Scripts’ team of pharmacists who can answer questions and provide advice on reducing medication costs.

As a Fortune 500 company, the largest pharmacy benefits management company in the U.S. and a strong industry leader in clinical programs, Express Scripts continually seeks innovative ways to improve pharmacy access for its members.

Over 95 percent of pharmacies across Hawai‘i participate in the Express Scripts network, including Longs Drugs/CVS.

According to Express Scripts’ recent analysis, an estimated 576,000 Americans spent more than the U.S. median household income on prescription medications in 2014. This population of patients grew an astounding 63 percent in one year.

Express Scripts’ Hepatitis Cure Value Program, which lowered the cost of curative medications by nearly 50 percent in 2015, is an example of the company’s dedication to providing superior service to its members.

Finally, Express Scripts offers online conveniences and web-based solutions, including a dedicated portal and drug pricing tools that empower UHA members with information previously unavailable to them with UHA’s previous provider.

“In order for UHA to continue to effectively care for the needs of our members, we must align ourselves with partners that will provide superior services, while helping our members address the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs,” explains Howard Lee, CEO of UHA. “We’ve been listening to feedback from our members and believe that partnering with Express Scripts will bring significant benefits.”

In 2015, Express Scripts was awarded the Isadore King Spirit of Service Award by Medicaid Health Plans of America. It was 66th overall in the Forbes magazine listing of the World’s Most Innovative Companies and ranked 22nd in the Fortune 500.
